I found that signal was never really the problem with O2: it was the bandwidth. Even with an utterly perfect five pip signal, if the cell tower is on the network with a slow (or overloaded) connection, performance will still suck.

Nowadays I still get better speeds on a three-pip Three signal than I did on a five-pip O2 signal.

Thanks for the update. Running with PAYG sim in my old 3G, mixed rsults. 3g better when I get it, but signal seems to drop out and back in a lot. Overall not much in it signalwise when compared to O2 though only my perception and not science tific in any way.

(Sorry for the delay.. your reply disappeared into the aether, thanks to a typo)

Three's okay. I was in London over the weekend, and it wasn't good coverage by any stretch, but my friend on Orange was getting similar results. In particular, I wasn't even getting EDGE, let alone 3G outside the new Apple Store at Covent Garden. The lack of bundled WiFi was slightly annoying, too.

On the other hand, the price is great. I just topped up another £5 to Three (for the first time since I signed up), primarily for the extra 150MB of internet access you get each time you top up. So, I'm pretty much using the phone in the same way as I did on the £30 O2 tariff, but paying less than £5 a month.

Signal out here in Portishead isn't too bad... about the same as O2, I'd say. Cycling between Portishead and Bristol resulted in better coverage overall.

Other than that, I can't really comment: I don't get out much :-)

I'm still eager to see what Orange can do, as the call costs on their Racoon PAYG plan are substantially less (15p rather than 25p). However, they're still not advertising a SIM-only PAYG micro-SIM option.

I'm in pretty much the exact same boat as you, with a similar network history too.

I'm really keen to hear how you've been getting on with three? Also if you've had a chance to gauge coverage and data speeds outside London - I know this really depends on where you are, but have you been generally satisfied?

I live between London and Sussex and so both areas for coverage interest me. I've actually tried a three PAYG in Sussex near Brighton and it seemed fine and as fast as 02 for data.

Thanks for your post - it's really galvanised me into looking for a switch when I upgrade to iPhone 4 soon.
