'Services Provided By General Practitioners'

Most people visit their GP for a diagnosis and treatment of ill health. Apart from diagnosis and treatment, services offered by a GP can vary widely from practice to practice. The changes in the NHS aim to encourage GPs to concentrate on helping the healthy to remain so, as well as treating the sick. A GP is obliged to provide a practice leaflet detailing services available.

All GPs provide:

  • Prescriptions.

  • Health checkups.

  • Cervical smears.

  • Immunisation.

  • Sick Certificates if you are unable to work because of ill health.

Other services that may be provided include:

  • Health promotion clinics.

  • Contraception.

  • Minor surgery.

  • Counselling.

  • Medical examinations for insurance, seat belt exemptions etc. (for a fee).
  • Maternity services.

  • Complementary therapies.
