'Referral To Hospital'

Most hospital admissions are through referral by the GP but there are two ways in which you can attend an NHS hospital without a doctor's letter:

  • through the Accident and Emergency Department (also known as A & E, or casualty).

  • by going to a special clinic for the treatment of sexually transmitted diseases, also known as the STD Clinic, and Genito-Urinary Medicine or GUM Clinic. (See chapter on GUM/ Sexual Health Clinics.)
