Waiting for treatment

'Waiting For Treatment'

For hospital treatment under the NHS you will need a GP's referral to see a specialist. The specialist is usually a consultant, whom you will see first of all in the outpatient department at the hospital (or you may see a member of his or her team such as a registrar.) Some consultants also see patients in smaller community hospitals or health centres.

In the NHS today a routine non-urgent appointment with a consultant almost always involves joining a waiting list. Reducing waiting lists was a key element of the Patient Charter initiative.
