'Self Help Support Centres & Councils for Voluntary Service'

There are self help support centres in local areas throughout the UK. These centres provide practical services such as meeting rooms, typing, printing facilities; they can help with training and getting new groups off the ground and they act as a good source of information on local groups.

In most cases these support centres form part of a local Council for Voluntary Service (CVS). Not every local area will have a specific self help project, whether independent or part of a CVS, but most towns have a CVS who can offer support of some description to self help groups. There are usually countywide umbrella bodies for voluntary activity too. Your public library will be able to give you the address as well as details of individual local groups.

You can also contact the following organisations to find your local voluntary sector development agency:

  • National Association of Councils for Voluntary Service (NACVS) for details of CVS throughout England. 3rd Floor, Arundel Court, 177 Arundel Street, Sheffield S1 2NU. Tel: 0114 278 6636.

  • National Council for Voluntary Organisations (NCVO), Regents Wharf, 8 All Saints Street, London N1 9RL Tel:0171 713 6161.

  • Wales Council for Voluntary Action, Llys Ifor, Crescent Road, Caerphilly, Mid Glamorgan CF8 1XL Tel:01222 860627.

  • Scottish Council for Voluntary Organisations, 18-19 Clarmont Crescent, Edinburgh EH7 4QD Tel:0131 556 3882.

  • Northern Ireland Council for Voluntary Action, 127 Ormeau Road, Belfast BT7 1SH Tel:01232 321224.

For people working with self help groups, some support is available on a national basis from Self Help Nottingham, 20 Pelham Road, Sherwood Rise, Nottingham NG5 1AP. Tel: 0115 969 1212 (for information) or 0115 969 1514 (for general enquiries). They offer training/consultancy, publications; resource collection of self help related articles and research and information about specific self help development projects around the UK.
