As part of the White Paper 'The New NHS', the Government proposes making advice and information about health, illness and the NHS more easily available to the public.
NHS Direct, a new 24 hour telephone advice line staffed by nurses, will be set up to provide self care advice and 'triage' or needs assessment. It will be piloted through three care and advice lines to begin in March 1998. The whole country will be covered by the year 2000.
