'News stories in 1948'

This section gives you an archive of the stories which made it into the national press during 1948.

'April 21'

A demonstration is given of a new British 'Shervick' tractor, specially designed for clearing land for the East African Groundnuts Scheme. Made from surplus Sherman tank parts and fitted with land clearing equipment, the new machine's most spectacular feat was to knock down a mature Sweet Chestnut tree with a girth of five feet at it's base, and to push it clear.

'April 24'

Manchester United beat Blackpool by 4 goals to 2 in the FA Cup Final. In the presence of the King and Queen and some 100,000 spectators, Manchester wins the FA Cup for the second time in their history. The match at Wembley is described in the press as a final "worthy of the occasion...a match of over-flowing talent, glorious and dramatic".
Manchester, in a "whirlwind" of action, recovered from Blackpool's lead of 2 goals to one in the last 20 minutes of the game.
