In the USA the Hungarian American physicist Peter Mark Goldmark demonstrates the first successful long-playing record which played up to five times longer than previous records.
Professor Lillian Penson becomes Britain's first woman vice-chancellor of London University.
In the Wimbledo Men's Singles tournament the British player, A J Mottram enters the 4th round by beating C Cucelly 6-8, 6-3, 10-12, 6-2 . The Times exclaims "and so at last after two lean years a player for England has once again reached the last 16 in the singles." Mottram was finally beaten in the 5th round by G Mulloy.
