'November 25'

Figures published show that 7.5 million people placed a bet each week on the football pools, an increase of 2 million since 1938.

The unpacking of some of the friezes of the Parthenon, the Elgin Marbles, take place in the British Museum. The friezes had been stored underground at Aldwych tube since the outbreak of war.
