Lester Piggot becomes Britain's youngest race winner when, aged 12, he rode 'The Chase' in a selling handicap race at Haydock Park. His mother worried about the effect the publicity could have on him and told reporters, "Don't spoil him. I don't know what all the fuss is about really - it was only a selling race...Of course we think he's a wonderful fellow, but he's our only child so that's natural".
