The Registrar-General announces a new low for infant mortality in the last three months. Deaths of babies under a year old is 41 per 1000 live births, which is the lowest record for any first quarter year.
The Lancet reports that because of the NHS, the practitioner, "for the first time in our history" has the opportunity to see patients "as much as he thinks necessary". Doctors now have the opportunity to visit patients in their homes or to ask patients to come back for subsequent visits, without feeling that this "adds to their financial indebtedness".
