The army announces its decision to make helping with crop harvests a priority during September, October and November. All possible aid would be given to farmers needing help with root crops and that all available men would be released from their military duties in order to meet the demands for labour on farms throughout Britain.
The Report to the Nation called for help: "To help with the corn harvest many office and factory workers have spent their holidays working at farm camps. Many are still needed in October and November to help lift the potato crop. Willing hands work wonders even if it is only for a week or two."
An anonymous French ship owner offers £1.5 million to found St Anthony's College in Oxford.
