'Local Events Mark 50 Years of The NHS'


In addition to the national events marking 50 years of the NHS, many hundreds of others are being staged around the country to celebrate the founding of the Health Service.

A tiny selection of the events taking place around the country include:

NORTHERN & YORKSHIRE Regional contact: Simon Mills 0191 301 1477
A health fair at Driffield showground; a health trail with exhibitions at various museums in Yorkshire and Humberside; a 'Help Yourself to Health' week in County Durham; living history role-playing events with local schools in Newcastle; a pictorial exhibition of health care in Hartlepool; cathedral services in Carlisle and Durham; publication of a book on the history of the NHS in Newcastle.

A debate in Cambridge on the future of the NHS; the launch of a heritage centre at Royal Berkshire and Battle Hospitals; a 'living museum' at Stamford Hospital; a celebration of the invention of prosthetic hips in Norwich at Norfolk and Norwich Hospital.

Well dressings in rural Derbyshire in conjunction with the Tourist Information Office and local 'healthy' walks planned with the Peak District Ranger Service; special service at Leicester Cathedral with the sermon by Health Minister, Paul Boateng; 'Health Village' at the annual Lincolnshire Agricultural Show, with health organisations depicting the history of the NHS in the county; celebration performance of music and dance by patients in Nottinghamshire,
celebrating the five decades on the NHS; publication of a book describing the history of the NHS in the Barnsley area.

Event to commemorate Aneurin Bevan's official inauguration of the NHS at Trafford Park Hospital; gala events held by the health authority and five Trusts in the Morecambe area;
Longest Serving Employee award in Blackpool, Wyre and Fylde Community Trust; a commemorative newspaper produced in south Cheshire; an exhibition on the history of the NHS in St Helens' town hall.

Launch of a permanent display and exhibition on medical advances at Ashford Hospital; educational module to be developed on health issues for East Surrey College of Technology's media studies course; NHS trusts and health authorities in Sussex collaborating on NHS-themed South of England Show; St Helier Hospital to publish a book recalling its history through the eyes of patients.

Charity football match and launching a mobile museum of homeopathic medicine in Camden and Islington; Celebration service with an address by Cardinal Hume at St Albans in Hertfordshire; special visits for children to a Museum of Medicine by Ealing, Hammersmith and Hounslow Health Authority.
