'Scientists'

There are a range of scientists throughout the hospital, all requiring education to degree-level.

'Audiological Scientist'

'What do they do?' Audiological scientists develop and apply techniques and equipment to detect and compensate hearing loss, and diagnose neurological diseases.

'Educational and age requirements' Honours degree in behavioural or physical science.

'Training and qualifications' One-year residential MSc course followed by one year or supervised in-service training.

'Further information' Further details and application forms for most training posts can be obtained from: Clinical Scientists Clearing House, The Oxford Consortium, Old Road, Headington, Oxford OX3 7LE. A few training posts not covered by the Clearing House are advertised in the general scientific press and through professional organisations.

'Clinical Biochemist'

'What do they do?' Clinical biochemists develop and manage hospital and community methods of analysis and data interpretation, and advise on diagnosis and treatment of diseases.

'Educational and age requirements' Good honours degree in biochemistry or chemistry. Members and graduate members of the Royal Society of Chemistry, and members of the Institute of Biology are also eligible.

'Training and qualifications' Three years largely in-service training.

'Clinical Cytogeneticist'

'What do they do?' Clinical cytologists study chromosomes from patients' blood, tissue and bone marrow or other body tissue or fluid to diagnose genetic disease.

'Education and age requirements' Good honours degree in relevant biological science.

'Training and qualifications' Two-year in-service training programme.

'Clinical Engineer'

'What do they do?' Clinical engineers design equipment for diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation, and investigate the mechanics of the human body.

'Educational and age requirements' Normally, an honours degree in an engineering or physical science. Higher degrees or industrial experience may be valuable.

'Training and qualifications' Two-year in-service training syllabus, which may incorporate a relevant MSc and usually counts towards Chartered status (CEng).
